Luna is an 8 year old female Karakachan and is the most delightful girl. Before I tell you all about her, please read the information on her breed and their characteristics.
The Karakachan dog is a large livestock guardian breed originating from Bulgaria.
Named after the Karakachans, a nomadic group of shepherds known for their dedication to sheep herding, this breed has been developed over centuries (they can be traced back to 3 centuries BC) to protect livestock from predators like wolves, bears, and other threats in the mountainous regions of Bulgaria.
Today, the Karakachan dog is not just a working animal but also a symbol of the country’s cultural heritage. They are still used as working dogs. They have been used as border guard dogs by the army and are also valued as family guardians, sometimes seen in dog sports or as companion animals in rural settings.
Luna has a sturdy and robust physique. She has a thick double and weather-resistant coat designed to endure harsh climates.
Although Luna loves to be outdoors, she does like to have access to indoors, check up on everyone and enjoy some attention, and, of course, to snooze when it’s very wet. She sleeps indoors at night. It’s likely Luna would struggle in an overly heated house.
Luna’s temperament and character are typical of her breed. Renowned for their loyalty, bravery, and independence, Karakachan dogs are highly protective of their flock and family, making them excellent guard dogs.
However, this protective nature can also make them wary of strangers. They are intelligent and can be stubborn, so they require a kind but firm and consistent approach to training.
Active dogs that need plenty of space to roam are best suited to rural or farm environments where they can perform their traditional role as family guardians, with well-secured space to patrol. Luna checks all these boxes.
Luna’s date of birth is recorded as 25/10/2015. She is healthy and spayed. She is also Brucella canis free, as shown in a recent test. Karakachan dogs have a life expectancy of around 12 to 14 years. It’s important to ensure proper diet and regular exercise.
Luna is very friendly with 99% of our visitors, but she is very protective of the property when we are not around. She isn’t always overly keen on other dogs on her turf, generally preferring males and smaller dogs.
She has her own area here and mixes with some dogs under supervision. She would fight over fresh or favoured bones and food, so these are always kept separate.
We understand that in Bulgaria, she lived in a compound with many others, so we suspect there was competition over resources.
Luna has always been friendly to people and dogs she has met when out. She is a very clean dog indoors, doesn’t steal or chew, though she will take blankets or cushions outdoors to lie on. She walks well on a lead and is fine in the car.
If you think Luna would consider your family as her forever home, please email her at:

Please note that applicants will be home vetted, references may be taken, and they will be required to travel to the Sanctuary near Kidwelly, South Wales, to meet her.
