When we found Giani, a 3 year old male Cross-Breed, in the kill shelter in December 2024, he was caged alone. But because he had already been torn apart. Attacked by bigger dogs, Giani fought for his life. When the fight was over, he had lost his eye—but worse, he had lost his trust. Alone in his cage, he didn’t cry, didn’t beg, didn’t expect kindness. He had given up. We reached out for him, and he flinched. We spoke softly to him, and he lowered his head. And when we gently touched him, he let out the deepest sigh—as if he had been waiting his whole life to feel safe. He learned that not all hands hurt—some heal. He learned that not all dogs attack—some become friends. And he learned that not all humans leave—some stay. Today, Giani is no longer the broken soul we pulled from that cage. He is warm, loving, and full of hope. He craves human touch, leans into affection, and just wants to belong. He has learned to trust other dogs and now gets along beautifully. But there’s one thing he still doesn’t have—a home. He lost an eye, but he never lost his heart. He carries the scars of his past, but he is ready to love with all that’s left.
